Wendy Ntinezo of Black Merge TV invited me to write a letter to my future self for her “Born to be Different” project.
I was 57 at the time I wrote this, and my idea was that this would be a message to myself for the occasion of my 75th birthday.
Trying to peer into the future to write this was a very emotional experience. I would recommend that everyone try it.
Dear Deborah
As I write to you today, my 57-year old self seems, at last, to be working out who she is, and what she can offer to the world.
Middle-aged me is learning to deal with the insecurities, the doubts, and the fears that have been holding me back for as long as I can remember.
I so hope that you have been able to keep up this belief in yourself, that you still do something every day to scare yourself, that you have satisfied some of the wanderlust, and that you still wear whatever the heck you like.
Ooh, by the way, have you still got our ice-cream cone hairstyle?
My wish for you is that you are well and that your body is strong.
Are you still going to gym and lifting those weights? I hope so.
I hope that you have as much love in your life as I do now.
Keep being you, and dance tonight away with your lover.
My name is Deborah, and I was born to be different.
